The military uses six bands on a F10 Static Line or a SF10 alpha chute. (Where they have parachutists jumping off the line in succession.)
Trivia: You will see the parachute bands on the upper body LBE gear of the Seals in the movie Lone Survivor starring Mark Wahlberg.
They are used for a multitude of purposes to silence and secure gear.
The military uses these bands on the parachutes used for free fall.
